Visually Impaired Preschool Services
1906 Goldsmith Lane in Louisville, KY 40218

VIPS helps families by providing educational support to young children with visual impairments to strengthen their foundation. Where a sighted child might grasp a complicated subject or concept with a single glance, visually impaired children could be a puzzle of disconnected information. The child must learn to recognize and integrate the ‘pieces’ into a meaningful picture of the world.
Since 1985, VIPS has educated and trained blind and visually impaired preschool children, preparing them for future success in the sighted world.
VIPS believes that parents are their children’s first and best teachers, and therefore provides a wide range of family support programs to help VIPS learn techniques to encourage their child’s learning and independence. These include a newsletter, access to education materials and workshops, guest speakers and recreational outings. All family members are encouraged to attend.
VIPS strives to be a national leader in services to young children who are visually impaired through evidence-based best practices in education of visually-impaired and early childhood education.
VIPS has offices in Louisville, Lexington and Indianapolis, serving nearly 400 children a year in KY and IN. VIPS is the only agency of its kind in the area.
Services to children: Assessment, Home and Community-based visits, Center-based programs, Pre-braille and Braille instruction, Orientation and Mobility, Deaf-Blind instruction, Onsite Eye Exams, Consultation with Child Care Providers and Preschools, Transition Planning, and Advocacy.
Services to Families: Statewide outreach, parent groups, workshops, newsletter, community outings, annual family retreat
Community Services: Referral sources for physicians and other professionals; interagency collaboration, in-service training, volunteer opportunities, university practicum and student teacher placement, student mentoring, “Can do!” educational video series.
VIPS believes that every child has a contribution to make to society and should be valued as an individual. Young children who are visually impaired need and have a right to individualized, specialized services to empower them to function maximally in the sighted world. Young children who are visually impaired are children first, and offering parent education and support benefits the child’s development.
Siblings, extended family members and significant others should be included in family education and support activities, and building awareness of the needs of young children who are visually impaired and engaging in community advocacy are important responsibilities for the VIPS staff and board members.
