2016 Quilters' Day Out
Another successful event for District 6 Quilters' Day Out 2016.
This year's event was held on Saturday, February 27th, at the Paroquet Springs Conference Center, Shepherdsville, Kentucky. The weather cooperated fully and provided a sunny day. We welcomed 800 attendees to our new location. We could not be more pleased with our new venue. Our concern over weather and location appeared to be for naught.
Phil Lloyd-Sidle from The Center for Women and Children, and Mary Bauer, KHQS President Elect, were part of the opening ceremonies. Mr. Lloyd-Sidle thanked our organization for graciously sponsoring his important organization. Mary provided a very informative, though brief, history of Quilters' Day Out. We were so pleased to have such community-minded individuals be a part of our event.
Our quilters are the most generous attendees to any event. We thank you for the loads and loads of baby supplies, handmade baby quilts and bibs, to mention just a few items. In addition to the donated items, cash donations totaled $478.00. The magnificent Opportunity Quilt donated by Mary Bauer raised $850.00. The Center for Women and Children was overwhelmed and very appreciative of the generosity shown to them on February 27th. Thank you to all our attendees!
There was plenty to see and do during the day. Fourteen Guilds participated along with representatives from Quilts of Valor, Project Linus, and Hosparus. Gwen Receveur was our Featured Quilter this year. Gwen was the Kentucky State Fair 2015 Best of Show winner. Her winning quilt and other examples of her expert workmanship were on display. Angela Huffman provided a trunk show and lecture on her quilting odyssey, and Susan McCombs lectured on the many types of batting. The Vendor Room hosted 26 vendors and the Stage where Marilou Jacob of The Needle Arts Center and five participating vendors provided "Sew Cool, I Didn't Know That" demonstrations on a variety of techniques and gadgets. There were 18 Guild Prize Baskets available and 18 lucky winners. And one lucky winner took home the Grand Prize "3 in 1 High Definition Ottlite". Fourteen vendors also contributed door prizes for 14 lucky winners.
This year's Viewers' Choice Challenge was Modern. The First Place Winners were:
Miniature -- Lou Ann Buechele
Wall Hanging -- Carla DeSpain
Bed Size -- Linda Sanford
Congratulations to all who participated.
The Second Annual Golden Scissors Award winner was the Mt. Washington Bees. This award is presented to the best decorated guild booth by Attendees' Choice Votes. The Bees received a plaque to display again in their booth and a certificate for their guild records. Congratulations on your second win!!
Planning will begin in July for next year! Mark your calendars for February 25, 2017.
